Mary H. Sizemore

At a young age, Mary volunteered as a Candy Striper and realized her dream was to become a nurse. She graduated from William Adams High School in 1962, and immediately continued her education at Wichita General Hospital School of Nursing where she obtained her Nursing Diploma. She then went on to complete her Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Incarnate Word College, Master’s Degree in Nursing from Texas Women’s University, and her Doctorate of Education (EdD) through Nova Southeastern University.

After living and working as a nurse in many places, Mary decided to move to El Paso to be close to her sister and brother-in-law. She then decided to stay and share nursing by teaching it to those who had the passion to care for others.

Throughout her career in nursing education, Mary taught at El Paso Community College, The University of Texas at El Paso, and New Mexico State University. She retired from NMSU in 2012 after having been an Associate Professor of Nursing and ultimately the Director of the Online RN-BSN Program. After retiring, she was still unable to stay away from teaching and returned to a faculty position to teach part-time in the online program until she was no longer able.

Had she not become a nurse, Mary very well could have become a photographer! If you were around her for very long you couldn’t help but see the multiple cameras she carried with her over the years. She made sure that every trip, every event, every meet-up with friends or gathering with family included much picture taking. Her home was filled with photographs of all the people and times that she loved. She will be greatly missed.

Mary is survived by her niece, Ann Marie (Joe), great-niece Kaylee, cat Casper, and many friends and former students. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Nancy, and brother-in-law Jim.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, August 26, 2026 from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm with a memorial service at 5:30 pm at Funeraria del Angel central, 3839 Montana Ave. El Paso, Texas 79903.
