Michael Paul Moffeit Sr., 70 years old, of El Paso, Texas passed away peacefully on 17 November, 2021. Michael was born in Tyler, Texas on 15 October, 1951 to Thomas Moffeit and Gladys Jackson. Growing up, he spent countless hours roaming in the wilderness in search of new hiking, camping, hunting and fishing adventures with his younger brother, Terry Moffeit. Michael always had a strong desire to soak up as much knowledge and to help everyone he could. He served his community, even at a young age through his years with the Boy Scouts.
In 1970, he attended the University of Texas at Austin for his Undergraduate studies, where he served as a tutor, orientation advisor, and dorm/pre-law counselor. Upon completion, he continued on to the University of Houston Law School graduating in 1976. Shortly after receiving his Juris Doctor (JD) in Law, and passing the State of Texas Bar Exam, he moved to El Paso, Texas accepting a position with the University of Texas at El Paso as an Attorney and Counselor at Law with the Office of Students’ Legal Counsel. Shortly after, Michael opened his own private law practice serving his community for over 35 years.
For his next endeavor, Michael accepted a position as a Managing Assistant Attorney General with the State of Texas Attorney General’s office greatly contributing to the State’s efforts to ensure child support payments for millions of Texan children. In 2002 Michael was extremely honored to accept an appointment as a Magistrate Judge in the El Paso Municipal Court. In 2006 Michael accepted a position with the City of El Paso as the Chief Trial Attorney, later transitioning to the El Paso County District Attorney’s office as an Assistant District Attorney, assisting in the investigation and prosecution of many hundreds of cases in the El Paso County and State of Texas Criminal Justice system. In 2013, Michael retired from practicing law after over 15 years with the District Attorney’s Office and over 35 years of practicing Law in El Paso.
Michael is remembered by his family as a seeker of adventure, always willing and able to go out of the way to see something special or learn something new. He is also remembered to have been a living and breathing encyclopedia of information, somehow always having a couple of facts about anything ready to share. He could tell the most elaborate stories, with his classic humor never waiting long to make an appearance. He was a very dedicated father, devoting many hours to coaching sports teams, attending games, and always supportive with a positive attitude and great wisdom. Michael’s devotion and love for his family was only matched by his pride for his children, whom he always took every chance to brag about when he could.
Michael is survived by his brother, Terry Moffeit, and his children, Michael Paul Moffeit Jr., who currently serves on Active Duty with the U.S. Army, his wife Claudia and their children Jordan and Charlotte and Ariel Moffeit whom currently works as an Emergency Room Travel Nurse serving communities across the country.
Michael will be dearly missed by his loved ones and friends. The family will hold a celebration of life gathering in his honor as opposed to traditional funeral services.
