Nicolasa M. Flores, 77, known by her colleagues and friends as “Flower”, and her family as “Mom”, passed away peacefully on July 5, 2015, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born on March 23, 1938, she was the true definition of an Aries. Growing up in Smeltertown, she was the youngest of 6 children. She was a self-proclaimed tomboy. But don’t let this fool you, she was a fashionista and always incorporated her favorite color, purple into her everyday look; and was recognized as the “Purple Lady” when she was out doing what she loved- shopping.
After attending El Paso High, (with a lot of pride,) she went to work at Providence Hospital as a nursing assistant at the age of 17. This opened the door to her passion in nursing. She spent 52 years in the field and held positions that ranged from working in the ICU, working with people with addiction, and finally working with seniors at El Parque Adult Daycare. She enjoyed her time in the kitchen and cooked to the beat of her own drum, making what she called her “maranadas.” She had a strong belief in God and all the Catholic Saints.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Juan Morales and Francisca Flores, her brother Guadalupe and sister Maximina. She is survived by her daughters Lydia (Arturo), Cindy and her adopted son Frank (whom she nicknamed “Juanito”), her granddaughters Selina, Rebecca, Samantha, grandson Nikolas and her great granddaughter Isabella (“Chavelita”), the apple of her eye. Her grandchildren were her world and she was their voice of reason, the shoulder they cried on, the ear that listened, and the light that will guide them with all the words of wisdom and advice she gave them. Whether you knew her for years or minutes, she made a big impression. She was a rare find and there will never be anyone like her again. We would like to thank Dr. Jesus Gomez and his staff at the Cancer Treatment Center, and Dr. and Mrs. Perry Wolfe for all the care and compassion they gave her, as well as the family. She loved you all. Please join us to celebrate her life by wearing purple to her services.
Visitation will be Sunday, July 12, 2015 from 5:00 to 9:00pm with Rosary at 7:00pm at F.D.A. Martin Central. Funeral Mass will be Monday, July 13, 2015 at 9:30am at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment to follow at Evergreen East Cemetery.
