Norma Jean Green Jacobs passed away on August 26th in Santa Teresa, New Mexico at the age of 77. Norma was a native of Savannah, Georgia, born to Clarence and Francis Green(deceased). She and her husband Karoy moved to New Mexico in 2000 to be closer to their grandchildren. Norma was a member of St. Benedict the Moor Catholic Church where she sang in the gospel choir. When she moved to New Mexico she attended St. Mark’s UMC where she sang in the Traditional and Praise and Worship choir.
Norma attended Catholic schools in Savannah and was a graduate of St. Pius X class of 1961. She graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Springfield, MA in 1964 and went on to pursue multiple degrees from various schools of higher education.
She had a heart of service to others. This was evident in her career span as a nurse and her involvement in civil rights. She began her nursing career at Georgia Infirmary and later worked at Candler Hospital for more than twenty years as the head nurse of 6 North Orthopedic Unit where she was affectionally called “Jake” and later the director of Medical-Surgical Units and Services. Norma was a Civil Rights advocate beginning in her early teen years and participated in civil rights activities such as sit-ins and picketing. She continued her advocacy throughout her lifetime and worked with socio-civic clubs and civic organizations, to advocate for social change and human rights issues.
Norma was married to the late Karoy Jacobs, Sr. for 56 years. This union was blessed with four beautiful children, Karen, Karoy Jr.(deceased), Klaretta and Kartorrio. She was lovingly called “Nana” by her six precious grandchildren, Gabriel, Mihael, Ana Cristina, Mia Angelina, Cristiano and Mighty Murphy (canine grandson). She leaves to cherish her memory her children, her sisters, Reverend Myra Mitchell and Inez Lewis, a host of beloved nieces, nephews, family members, friends and her cherished 6 North family.
Norma was a caring and nurturing Christian who loved the Lord. She would not want to be mourned in death but remembered and celebrated in life for she is now singing for the Lord in His heavenly choir of angels.
A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, El Paso on November 6,2021
