Coach Roy Johnson, 89, of Anthony, Texas, was born on July 26, 1932 at Beaumont Army Hospital and passed away November 15, 2021. His father, Roy Franklin Johnson, was in the 2nd Horse Cavalry at Ft. Bliss. Roy’s grandparents, Harry and Letha Farlow and his parents Roy, Sr. and Fonda Farlow Johnson have all passed on.
Roy was raised by his grandparents when his mother died when he was 2 years old. He attended El Paso High school, Texas Western, and New Mexico Tech where he earned his Master in science and science teaching. Roy coached football and track and taught science at the junior and senior high school levels for 33 years. In 2003 he was ordained as a minister in the Christian Church.
He is survived by his children Roy Russell Johnson, Linda Joyce Brown and husband Jerry, and Fonda Jean Tripp and husband Darryl; his grandchildren Candice, Barry, Kenneth, Logan, Brianne, and Emily; and his great grandchildren Savannah, Madison, Austin, Charlotte, Emily Gavin, Gaige, Alora, and Olivia. Roy is also survived by his sister Judy Johnson and his aunt Barbara Farlow Tucker-Lawyer.
He was preceded in death by his wife Barbara Joyce Johnson, brother John Johnson and grandson Tyler Tripp.
Visitation will be 5:00-8:00pm Sunday, November 21 at Funeraria Del Angel Central, 3839 Montana Avenue. Funeral service will be 12:30pm Monday, November 22, at Coronado Christian Church, 118 Belvidere Street, followed by graveside service at Memory Gardens of the Valley, 4900 McNutt Road, Santa Teresa, New Mexico.
