Ruben Macias, age 92, entered into eternal rest at his home in El Paso, TX, on Monday June 6, 2022. Ruben grew up in Chihuahuita and the Segundo Barrio and was a graduate of Bowie High School, Class of 1948. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps and was stationed at El Toro Marine Base in California. After serving his country as a Marine, Ruben returned to El Paso and began working for the U.S. Postal Service. A mail sorter of the most proficient order, Ruben would retire from the U.S. Postal Service after 36 years of service.
Ruben could often be found on the golf course, the handball court at the YMCA, or winning numerous bowling tournaments at Freeway Lanes, Bowlero, Thunderbird, White Elephant, and Red Rooster. He was also a skilled craftsman, spending countless hours in his garage creating everything from Bowie Bear bricks, to dog houses, to benched seating for the Thanksgiving Day parade. Ruben was an avid collector of stamps, coins, rubber bands, and Bowie Bears memorabilia.
Ruben is preceded in death by his parents, Claudio Macias and Guadalupe Fierro Macias; daughter Martha Jane Macias; brothers Eduardo “Lalo” Macias (✝Lina) and Carlos Macias (✝Lola); sister Magdalena “Nena” Contreras (✝Tony); grandson Shane Frame; and great-grandson Jakeob Mohn.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Irene Lujan Macias; son Robert Macias (Julie); daughters Leonor Macias Dozal (Alfonso), Martha Jean Macias, Patricia Macias Gonzales (✝Carlos), and Graciela Macias-Frausto Pineda (Eduardo Pineda, ✝Jaime Frausto Jr.); and siblings Hortencia “Baby” Vela and Greg “Sonny” Macias. Ruben is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and countless friends he made throughout his life.
Visitation for Ruben will be held Monday, June 20, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Funeraria Del Angel Central, 3839 Montana Avenue, El Paso, TX 79903, with a Rosary at 7:00 PM. A Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, June 21, at 9:00 AM at St. Patrick Cathedral, 1118 N Mesa Street, El Paso, TX 79902. A Graveside Service will follow at 10:30 AM at Fort Bliss National Cemetery, 5200 Fred Wilson Avenue, El Paso, TX 79906.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations be made in Ruben’s honor to the Alzheimer’s Association. To our wonderful husband, brother, father, grandfather, and great grandfather: We love you and will miss you.
