For those of you who may not know me, my name is Estefanía. I am Orlando’s mother, and Steve is the father of my son. But he was so much more than that. He was one of the most important people in my life and a piece of my heart that I will carry forever.  Steve and I shared a bond built on care, respect, and understanding. Although we separated shortly after Orlando was born, our connection never disappeared. Our love for our son and our respect for each other kept us close. We chose to continue showing up for one another and for our family in the best way we knew how. We could talk about anything, with no limits. That was our co-parenting relationship.  We both knew how much we meant to each other. He knew my fears, dreams, struggles, and strengths. And I knew him too, at least the parts he wanted me to see, because Steve never wanted to worry me. He carried so much quietly and always tried to protect me, even when he needed comfort himself. That was who he was: selfless, gentle, and loving.  But Steve was also funny—so funny. He had a way of making you laugh when you needed it most. He was an incredible father who loved Orlando with his whole heart. They were best friends. He showed up not only when it was easy, but when it mattered most. He also opened his heart to my youngest son, Brayden, and became a father figure to him. He made sure Brayden never felt left out and always felt seen, included, and loved. He treated him like his own and gave him something priceless: a sense of belonging.  I never imagined a life without him. Without Steve, so many memories and moments would not make sense. I never thought I would speak about him in past tense. I will always be grateful for the childhood he gave my children, filled with unconditional love.  Thank you, Steve, for everything. Thank you for loving us so well. This loss feels unreal, and my heart is completely broken. I’ve known him since I was 14, and it’s hard to imagine life without him here. He wasn’t just my nephew’s dad, he was truly family and someone who shaped so many of our lives in quiet but meaningful ways.
When he and my sister were dating in high school, I was the shy freshman with no friends. I would sit with them at lunch, and even when my sister wanted me to make my own friends, he always made sure I stayed with them. He didn’t have to do that, but he did. He made me feel safe, included, and like I mattered, and I’ve carried that with me ever since.
He was an incredible father. He loved deeply, showed up consistently, and always made sure everyone around him was okay. When I was pregnant with my son, he sent me one of the kindest messages I’ve ever received. He told me how happy he was for me, thanked me for how much I had been there for their son, and told me I was going to be a great mom. That message meant everything to me, and I will hold onto it forever.
We will miss him more than words can say. Our family will never be the same, but we will surround Orlando with love and support and make sure he always knows how deeply his dad was loved. We will honor him by showing up, the way he always did for all of us.
