Dear Bone family, please accept my deepest sympathies on the passing of your beloved husband and father. I have only just received the news on 31st March from Elder Gerrit W. Gong. I had written to Elder Gong a few months ago in response to his talk at October 2020 Conference, in which he mentioned that missionary work was being carried on in all parts of the world except Antarctica. I told him how my husband Jack, the expedition cook, had been baptised only 2 months before leaving home to join the expedition to Wilkes in 1962. How in that small party of 24 he had been blessed to have the support of another LDS member in Steve. Not only that, but another expedition member who had been on an earlier expedition with Jack, was so impressed by the changes he saw in him that when he returned home, he joined the church himself. We were unaware of this for many years until we received a letter of gratitude from him in which he described Jack and Steve as being head and shoulders above the rest of the crew. We would have tried to contact Steve before now, but an Antarctic colleague had mistakenly told us that he had died in Vietnam. Please accept our deepest gratitude on Steve's behalf for his missionary work in the Antarctic. We have grown into a large family of 7 children, 31 grandchildren and currently 18 great-grandchildren, a number of whom have also served missions. Jack passed away a little over a year ago at the age of 91, and his former colleague, Neville Collins, a year or so before that. Hopefully, all three of them can now share their memories together, but in the meantime I want you to know that our family have the deepest gratitude for Steve's support at an important time in our lives, and that his name has often been on our lips. Dad loved his family so much. I was the oldest and as such,  he called me, "sister Sue." I loved this nickname from him since a lot of times I was called Suzy Q. Sister Sue was so much better! Dad you taught me to love our Savior, Jesus Christ and to have a testimony of His gospel. May your mortal body rest in peace as I await to see you again.
