She was the daughter of Anna Herr Freeders and Marion Freeders and spent her early years in Ohio, a place she remembered fondly throughout her life. She especially treasured memories of her aunt, Marie Herr Groth, and uncle, Jack Groth. Her connection to family, history, and tradition remained important to her throughout her life.
Virginia married her high school sweetheart, John Mummert Sr. After living in several places early in their marriage, including Panama during John’s military service, they settled in El Paso, Texas, in 1960, where they remained for the rest of their lives. John preceded her in death in 1988.
She was the devoted mother of four children: John Mummert Jr., Sue Gagliano, Elizabeth Feverston, and Eric Mummert. She was also a proud grandmother to Robert Feverston, Jonathan Feverston, Shaun Feverston, who preceded her in death, Rebecca Mummert, and Jonn Garrett Mummert.
Virginia is survived by her sister, Jean Neumann and her brother, Robert Freeders, preceded her in death.
In her later years, her son, John Mummert Jr., lovingly served as her primary caregiver, providing her with devoted care, support, and helping fulfill her wish to remain in the comfort of her own home rather than move to a retirement community.
Virginia was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood and the Daughters of the American Revolution, and she remained active in her women’s groups. She was also a longtime member of St. Paul’s Methodist Church. Reading was one of her favorite pastimes, and she maintained a lifelong interest in books, family history, and the traditions she had known since childhood.
Virginia will also be remembered through the family recipes, stories, and traditions she passed down over the years. Her life was woven into the history of her family across generations, from Ohio to Texas, and those memories will remain part of the family she leaves behind.
She is survived by her children, grandchildren, sister, extended family, and friends, who will remember her in their own ways and carry forward the parts of her life and history that became part of theirs.
