Caroline "Katie" (Zimmerman) Avila

Caroline (Katie) Avila, age 93, entered the presence of our Lord on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at Baptist Health Hardin in Elizabethtown. She leaves behind a beautiful legacy of love, strength, devotion to family, and a life that touched more people than she could have ever known.

Caroline was born in Heidelberg, Germany on December 4, 1932. Her childhood years were difficult because they took place during WWII. However, those years were pivotal to her becoming a strong and compassionate woman. It was during the post war years she met her husband and love of her life, Ruben Avila, while he was stationed in Heidelberg. Two people from different parts of the world found one another, fell in love, and began a life together.

Caroline came to the United States in her early twenties as a military wife, although difficult, she adapted in time. She left the country where she was born to start a life with a man from another part of the world. She became a wonderful wife, a mother and an Omi. She grew to love this country, the people and this nation’s values. One of her proudest moments in life was becoming a United States citizen in San Antonia, Texas. She spoke of this event with such pride and how much she loved this country she made home.

Caroline became a Catholic and devoted follower of Christ. It was important to her and her husband, so her children were all raised in the Catholic faith. At the time of her death, she was a member of Saint James Catholic Church in Elizabethtown. Her faith was the foundation of her character and the source of her compassion, patience and kindness she extended to others. To know her was to love her.

Before Caroline became chronically ill she had a zest for life. She enjoyed traveling, cooking, family gatherings, homemaking, and time with friends. She had a deep love of animals, especially her dogs in life: Tippy, Buffy, Pepper, and Penny.

Caroline was preceded in death by her devoted and loving husband, Ruben Avila. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers and a sister, all residing in Germany.

Her deepest love was the love of family. She was a devoted mother, grandmother (Omi) and aunt. She will be immensely missed by her loved ones. She is survived by her son, Robert Avila; daughters, Judith (Dwight) Rhodes, and Janet(Tony) Robinson; her grandchildren, Terea (Derek) Williamson, Camille Bill, Mary Avila; great-grandchildren, Dylan, Keagan and Addy. Her presence was comforting, her words were a blessing, and her example will remain a guiding light for generations to come.

Her family would like to express their gratitude to the loving friends that helped in her care this last year: Alison Kimble, Donna Grubbs, Allegra Barrett, and Judy Logsdon. They would also like to extend their appreciation to the love and kindness she received by the caregivers (her angels) at Vitality Assisted Living.

The funeral will be Thursday, October 1st, at 11 am at St. James Catholic Church with Father Kenny officiating. There will be time for visitation with family starting at 10 am at the church. Burial will be at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery in Radcliff on Friday, October 2, at 9:30 am, where she will be laid to rest with her loving husband, Ruben.
