Neil McPhail, longtime resident of Allenspark and Estes Park, died on Feb. 16, 2019, after a short illness, with his wife Katy by his side. Neil was born on Feb. 19, 1948, in Waterbury, Connecticut to Alexander and Elsie (Milici) McPhail. He attended Clark University, and graduated summa cum laude from Western New England College of Law. He practiced law in Connecticut and Colorado, specializing in criminal defense. Neil met his wife Katy Chandler in 1999 in Estes Park. They were married on June 3, 2000, at the Enos Mills home site, and made their home in Allenspark at Katy’s family cabin.
Neil was a lifelong blues guitar player, and a member of many bands throughout his life. During his early performing years, Neil opened for acts such as Bonnie Raitt and Poco. After moving to Estes Park in 1976, Neil formed the Continental Blues Band along with drummer Willie Panker, and continued his musical pursuits by performing with several bands in Northern Colorado over the years.
Neil was an avid dog lover and rescued 11 dogs during his lifetime. Much of Neil’s time was spent taking care of, playing with, and enjoying the company of his dogs. Neil loved to travel and fulfilled a dream of visiting several archeological sites in Mexico in the last several years. Throughout his travels Neil enjoyed discovering new birds, flowers, and landscapes to photograph.
Neil is survived by his wife Katy, his daughter Galadriel McPhail (Norwin Restrepo), his granddaughters Lila and Nina Restrepo, and his dogs, Jessie, Meggie, and Stevie. A memorial/musical celebration will be held in the spring.
