August 6, 1942-May 14 , 2019
William "Dean" Tieman, age 76, passed away at his beloved home in Estes Park, Colorado, on the morning of Tuesday, May 14th, as the sun shone across the peaks surrounding his mountain paradise. He was born in Bloomington, Indiana, on August 6th, 1942, to Alice Kleindolfer Tieman and Robert Tieman.
He attended John Marshall High School in Los Angeles followed by Los Angeles City College where he earned an associate degree in electronics and bachelor of engineering. His drive to learn continued in graduate school, studying math at USC, law at UCLA, business planning at Harvard, ethics at Stanford, and operations research at the Colorado School of Mines. As a student he worked at Pacific Bell where he was instrumental in developing the field of telecommunications. He assisted in a top national security project, which established direct lines between NORAD, the pentagon, and the White House.
Bill seized every opportunity to travel the world by joining the American Bell International team in Tehran, Iran. This move sparked a career in international communications, which lead to exploring The Netherlands, Philippines, Czech Republic, Russia, Japan, Nigeria, India, Taiwan, and England. Through his travels he discovered a passion for learning about new cultures, traditions, and languages.
Eventually he called Colorado home and continued his lifelong love affair with the wilderness. Bill backpacked in the wind River Range, climbed peaks in Colorado, and enjoyed collecting unique treasures along the way. Once retired, Bill kept his appreciation for the outdoors alive by volunteering with the Road Hogs in Rocky Mountain National Park.
These bountiful life experiences and passions were instilled in his three children, Marcos, Jenny, and Natasha. Tales of his countless adventures, mesmerizing stories and immature jokes created an unbreakable bond between them. Later in life Bill fell in love with Chris. Together they continued exploring the US visiting Hawaii, California, Iowa, Florida, Washington, and Colorado's Rocky Mountains. Everyone in his life held a special place in his heart, including his "little boy" Skip.
Bill is survived by his loving partner, Chris Labin, his two daughters Jenny Tieman and Natasha Tieman, his son Marcos Tieman, his sister Nancy Loporchio, brother Ed Schultz, his niece Mary Loporchio, nephew Frankie Loporchio, aunts Irene Freeman and Betty Kreml, and numerous cousins and extended family.
A Buddhist celebration of life will be held on Monday, June 24th, from 5-8 pm at the Shambhala Center, 1345 Spruce St., Boulder, Colorado. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Democratic Party or Rocky Mountain Nature Conservancy PO Box 3100 Estes Park, CO 80517.
