

Gene was a graduate of Reitz High School, class of 1953. He was a member of the Reitz varsity football team and was chosen to be on the Courier and Press All City team in 1952. He loved sports and continued to be an avid Reitz football and basketball fan throughout his life. Gene worked many years at Goebel Furniture Co. as a supervisor in their cutting and material unit before starting Hunter Upholstery Shop in 1967. The majority of his adult life was spent attending church at First Avenue Presbyterian Church and was married there in 1957. He was a member of American Legion Post #8, and the Downtown Quarterback Club, where he was a member of their 1952 football team. He especially enjoyed time with family and was a loving and caring person. Gene was a loyal friend and met monthly for lunch with school friends, some he had known since early grade school. He always enjoyed horseback riding and walking in the surf on any beach. In his spare time, Gene enjoyed watching sports and a good western on television. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Naomi (DePriest); brother, David E. and wife Jeanette; nephews, Clint, Kurt and wife Jennifer; great nephews, Ethan and Mason Hunter. A cousin who seemed like a second brother, Gary and wife Margie Pearce; niece Donnetta and husband John Morrow, and their children Taylor and wife Valerie Morrow, Hannah and husband Chad Edwards, and Heather and husband Jared Baehl; Aunt Hazel Book, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilford and Pauline Hunter. Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 pm, Monday, June 19, 2017 at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel-A Family Tradition Funeral Home, 5330 Washington Ave., Evansville with Reverend Gene Feagan officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Friends may visit from 10 am, until service time celebrating Gene’s life at 1:30 Monday, at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel.
