Herb was born in Anaconda, MT to Joseph & Gertrude Matthews. Herb spent all his education in the Everett School District, graduating from EHS in 1959.
He was a very talented musician playing mandolin, banjo and guitar. He loved all music especially the folk music of the 1960’s with artists such as Peter Paul and Mary and the Kingston Trio.
Herb spent 3 years in the Army with the 92nd Engineer Battalion at Ft. Bragg in North Carolina, he was sent into conflict in Santo Domingo & served 5 months attached with the 101st Airborne for which he earned an Armed Forces Expeditionary Forces Medal.
On his return from the service he went to work for Everett Auto parts which became his extended family 53+ years there as a certified automotive machinist from 1965 to 2018 when he retired.
Herb had many friends in the community and had received awards from Snohomish High School Vocational Advisor 1984-1987. In 1980, Appreciation for Vocational Club of America & 1981 Certificate of Award for Sno-Isle Skill Center Advisory Committee Award. He loved mentoring the young people & was always helping someone.
Herb was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Mary; brother, Clarence & two, sisters-in-law Elaine & Carol Lee.
Herb is survived by sisters, Frances Eaton (Dick) and Carol Jolley (Farlin); brother, Joseph Matthews; nephews, Mark Matthews, Steven Matthews, Eric Quinn, Mike Quinn (Melissa), Brad Jolley (Sherry) and Richard Eaton; nieces, Tamie Benito (Wade), Stacy Kutz (Joe) and Kristin Eaton, also surviving him are grandnephews, Chase Kutz, Cole Kutz, Wyatt Jolley and Anthony Quinn; grandnieces, Lynell Jolley, Erin Wilson (Ian), Macie Aufiero (Justin), Carly Simone (Jordan) and Sara Quinn; great grandniece, Caroline and great grandnephew, Graeme.
Viewing will begin at 9am, with services 10:00am, Saturday February 5, 2022 at Evergreen Funeral Home and Cemetery 4504 Broadway, Everett WA 98203. Graveside service will follow.
