John George ("Jack") Eyler was born in Seattle on April 20th 1936 and died in Everett on February 20th 2017. He had been in ill-health for a number of months. He is survived by his wife of 55 years (Shirley), his five children (Craig, Kathy, Tom, Susan and Teresa), four sons-and-daughters-in-law (Laura, Mitch, Bob and Stephanie), 10 nieces and nephews (Doug, Bob, Brad, Brian, Amy, Ann, Jeff, John, Steve and James), 12 grandchildren (Kyle, Nicholas, Courtney, Brandon, Matthew, Joshua, Jacob, Kaitlyn, Reese, Harlan, Kelly and Robert) and innumerable friends and acquaintances. He was preceded in death by his father Cliff, his mother Elsie and his brother Bob.
Jack lived in and around Seattle for most of his life, apart from some time in California in the early '60s. He lived in West Seattle with his family and went to elementary school at Holy Rosary, just a block from his childhood home on 42nd and Dakota. He spent his high school years at O'Dea, then went on to Seattle University and got his Master's Degree in Civil Engineering from Stanford University in Palo Alto.
He worked at Standard Oil in San Francisco, where he met his wife-to-be Shirley, and went on to work for Boeing and Baugh Construction before deciding self-employment was the way to go. He involved himself in real estate development and management, and was particularly proud of the Silverdale On The Bay Resort Hotel, as he had been personally involved in all the details of its inception and construction and management for many years.
After retiring informally from work, he devoted his life to his grandchildren, attending all their school functions, going on vacations with the whole family and spending countless weekends with various combinations of them.
As he aged, various bits and pieces of him began to fail and he had a hip replacement, a heart valve replacement and was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and breathing problems. He refused to be slowed and was as active as his body would allow him to be.
He was a life-long church-goer and gave his time and money freely to the Roman Catholic Church and whichever local church he adopted, depending on which city he was living in at the time. Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bellevue was a decades-long favorite. He was a firm believer and was very confident of his destination in the next life, and was as prepared and ready-to-go as just about anyone that has ever lived. He knew his time had come last Monday afternoon. His body began to shut down and he left us at just about 6:00 that evening while surrounded by various family members.
Visitation will be at Evergreen Funeral Home at 4504 Broadway in Everett on Monday February 27th between the hours of 5:00pm and 8:00pm.
Funeral service will be held at Our Lady of Perpetual Help at 2619 Cedar Street in Everett on Tuesday February 28th at 11:00am. There will be an additional one hour of visitation at the church before the funeral service.
Private interment to follow later that afternoon at Holyrood Cemetery in Shoreline.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Union Gospel Mission, Smile Train or your favorite charity.
