Ted E. Ackmann

Ted E. Ackmann, age 86, of East Washington (Washington, PA), died Tuesday, September 4, 2012 in UPMC Shadyside after a long illness.

He was born January 31, 1926, in Brentwood, PA, the son of the late Theodore E. and Eleanor May Brown Ackmann. Ted was a graduate of South Hills High School, Everett Junior College in Everett, WA and the University of Washington. Ted served in with the 17th U.S. Army Air Force aboard a B-24 Bomber over Italy and Africa during WWII. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, 1793, in Washington PA.

After Ted's military service and college he married Corky (Courlyne Smith, deceased). Ted owned a residential real estate business in Everett, WA. In the early 1960's he moved his family to Sewickley, PA and began his commercial real estate career with The Kossman Development Co. In 1972 the family moved to Washington, PA where he resided until his death. In Washington, he worked for First Federal Savings and Loan and eventually for Millcraft Industries. For a time, Ted owned a majority stake of Pocono Downs Race Track in Wilkes-Barre, PA. During the last 30 years he developed numerous commercial properties for The Buncher Development Company, Pittsburgh PA.

As a child he was a Tam O'Shanter. He was a member of Peninsular Lodge of the F. & A.M.; he was a Shriner in the Valley of Pittsburgh and attained the 32nd degree with the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. Among his professional organization memberships were B.O.A.M.A and N.A.I.O.P. Until recently he was an active member of both.

On November 24, 1996, in San José, CA, Ted married Carmen DeLong, who survives her husband. His time spent with Carmen was full of joy and travel to visit friends, relatives and beaches near and far. Mr. Ackmann was known for his dynamic and entertaining personality. Even in his 70's he enjoyed dancing with Carmen at numerous events around Pittsburgh, took horseback riding lessons and spent weekends tending a gorgeous lawn and flowers.

Also surviving are a daughter, Melissa "Missy" Ackmann of Pittsburgh; five step-children, Christine (Jim) Russell, Valerie (Eric) Negler, Debbie (Harry) Nauseda, Hugh F. (Cheryl) Shyba and Paula (Greg) Phipps; six grandchildren, Emily and Nate Nauseda, Kelsey Shyba, Connor and Christopher Phipps and Justin (Jessica) Shyba; three great-grandchildren, Zoe, Jack and Beau Shyba and a son-in-law, Erik Blosser. Deceased is a step-daughter, Leslie Shyba Blosser.

Ted could never be forgotten...he truly knew just about everything! I have wonderful memories of him reciting poetry, wearing his kilt, serenading...I know you have memories even more precious. He was so loved. Thinking of you and praying for you to have relief from grief. Love,Debbie
