Teodor “Ted” Janowicz was born Feodor Jemilianowicz, February 22, 1946 in Hohonfels, Germany. His father, Maksym (Max) Jemielianowicz and mother, Agrippina (Olga) (nee: Jemieljanow) were displaced from their home in Poland. Ted was born in a displaced persons’ camp.
At the age of 4, Ted, his older brother, Stefan (deceased), Grandma (Anna), mom and dad came to the USA, changing their names to help with pronunciation. They initially settled in Eureka, Montana moving several years later to Seattle. Ted became a Naturalized Citizen on March 23, 1956.
Ted graduated from Lincoln High School in Seattle in June, 1964 and attended Seattle Pacific College prior to joining the Air Force in November of 1964. Ted was a Munitions Specialist, with tours in Vietnam, South Korea, the Philippines, Texas, Washington, Colorado and Utah. He was very proud of his military service.
Ted married the love of his life, Carol Sallen of Seattle, May 24, 1968. Carol joined her new husband when he returned to duty at Hill Air Force Base in Utah.
After his Honorable Discharge, he returned to Seattle and went back to school to finish a degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Washington in March of 1972. With his education, he was highly sought after by several aerospace companies, working in Pomona, California for about 3 years before transferring to a company in Seattle. A joy for him was flying on newly developed planes, helping in the testing of the electronic systems.
In January of 2001, Ted sent this message to his bosses: “There are times in each of our lives when decisions are made that are truly life altering. This is one of those times in my life. This decision was not arrived at easily, as many sleepless nights were spent questioning the wisdom and sanity of it. However, with the unwavering support of my wife, and the realization that our time on this earth is all too precious, and sometimes ever so fleeting, I now feel that it is time. There are simply too many unfulfilled goals I have yet to accomplish, and many wonders of this world yet to experience. Please accept this as official notification. My last day at the (local aerospace company) will be March 1, 2001.” Ted retired at the age of 55.
Ted was a very talented artisan with significant vision and an ability to bring beauty out of his ideas and the materials around him. He made striking bowls and plates from turned wood and fused glass. He and Carol completed significant projects in leaded glass, including a 6 by 18 foot window showing a windblown cypress tree, which they mounted into a home they remodeled in Bothell.
Ted and Carol enjoyed all artistic endeavors as a team. Together they remodeled and built an addition to their home in Bothell; built a new home in Shoreline from the ground up – acting as General Contractors and participating in actual construction; built another home in Richmond Beach, again, from the ground up. Their next project was an existing home in South Everett near Paine Field. Ted especially enjoyed this location because he could watch and identify all the test flights in and out of the Field.
The couple’s current home also contains many of their updates and includes views of Naval Station Everett. In the two years they have lived in this home, not one surface has been untouched by Ted’s sense of vision, creation of beauty and excellent craftsmanship. Ted also enjoyed creating beautiful arbors, fences, planting boxes and water features, adding to the beauty that Carol brought to each home with her sense of floral fashion, love of plants and flowers, and hard work.
Ted was an avid gun rights advocate (NRA lifetime member). He loved to golf and play poker with his buddies from work. Cribbage was another favorite pastime, which he enjoyed with his younger brother, Larry. Ted and Carol joined a gourmet club, which they enjoyed very much and where they made life-long friends. Ted built two beautiful wooden kayaks during his short periods of remission from the cancer that ultimately claimed his life. He joined the Masons and Shriners and was very supportive of their work. He and Carol are members of Northshore Christian Church.
Ted was a great friend to many and loved by all. He never refused to help when asked, using all his considerable talents as he was called to do.
For 5 years, Ted dealt valiantly with his various diagnoses of cancer, enduring multiple surgeries, and rounds of chemo and radiation. Carol referred to him as the “Energizer Bunny” – he just kept going and going and going. Many of the activities mentioned above were undertaken while Ted was dealing with cancer.
Ted and Carol were married 52 years; their earthly connection has been severed but their heart connection will live on.
Several years ago, Ted and Carol lost their beloved cat, Luci, to death. They returned home from the vet to see an eagle soaring above their backyard and immediately knew this was a sign that Luci sent them that she was now soaring with the eagles. This became a favorite image for the two of them – and now, Carol knows that her beloved husband is also – soaring with the eagles!
Ted is survived by his devoted wife, Carol, and his younger brother, Larry, wife Cheryl (Estes) of Edmonds and their children Julie Janowicz (Seattle) and Chris Janowicz and his new wife Amy Decker (Denver CO); nephews Mike and Todd and niece Darcie Janowicz Keiffer, all of California.
