Vonita J. McGee, quietly passed away Saturday, December 18, 2021. Vonita rarely did anything quietly; she had a large personality, a booming laugh, and an huge appetite for life. Everything she did, she did wholeheartedly, with zest, humor, and passion. Born to Rosella and Frazier McGee, both originally from Kentucky, and raised in Seattle, Vonita graduated from Franklin High School, and received her BA from Western Washington University. Growing up with 23 foster siblings in a multiracial family, Vonita was raised to value all people. Her parents and her brother, Stanley Carr, preceded her in death.
After having a number of jobs, she found fulfillment as a social worker, advocating for and helping people improve their situations and their lives. Halfway through her life, Ms. McGee found her faith with the Baha’i community, and devoted herself to learning, interpreting, and sharing its teachings. She was particularly active in spurring her community to greater efforts in the area of racial justice and equity, being a major force behind and contributing to Race Unity dinners and picnics. Her crowning achievement was completion of an internationally recognized teaching project on The Advent of Divine Justice.
Vonita McGee was active in civil rights causes, was a musician who played viola in community orchestras, and devoted herself to serving others. She loved all kinds of music, she loved movies, enjoyed playing board games and card games, and laughed wholeheartedly at humor in all its forms. She connected with people from many walks of life, and her passing leaves a queen-sized hole in many lives.
