Carolyn graduated from Miami Jackson High School in 1955, where she was in the famous marching band and traveled with the band to the Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Chicago Soldier's Field. She also attended Florida State University, in Tallahassee, where she studied nursing. Go Seminoles!
She was a devoted follower of Christ, having accepted Jesus as her personal Savior at the age of 11. Her strong faith was apparent to all she met. In addition to her love of Jesus, she had a great passion for loving and serving her family. Her husband, Jim, and family never doubted her great love for them and a goodbye was never complete without an "I love you" tacked on at the end!
Carolyn loved music, especially the piano. She was gifted with a great talent for playing classical music and she also loved playing hymns from her youth. It was common to see her seated at the piano surrounded by her children, singing and teaching them some of her favorites. Her great musical skill led to her playing piano at nursing homes and Easter Sunrise Services. She also loved traveling, having visited many countries with Jim.
Carolyn is survived by her husband of 48 years, Arthur James DeHayes, children Elizabeth Laguna, Jeffrey Ford, Jeffrey DeHayes, Stephanie Stevens (Dwayne), Melissa Pate (Billy), Matthew DeHayes (Nicole), 11 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She is survived by her sister, Mary Catherine Sloane, "Casey" of Morristown, Tennessee. She is also survived by her beloved companion cat, Roxie. She is preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Louise Colbert, granddaughter, Julie DeHayes and nephew, Phillip Sloane.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, June 20, 2022 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM, at the Mount Vernon Memorial Park, 8201 Greenback Lane, Fair Oaks, CA 95628.
