Daniel Voller Kilgore was born December 13, 1930 to David and Grace Kilgore in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He graduated from Washburn High School in Minneapolis in January 1949. Daniel went into the service in January 1951 when he joined the Army shortly after the Korean War had started. During that war, he served with the 2nd Indianhead Infantry Division; Company A, 23rd Infantry Regiment. He was always proud of earning the Company Infantryman's Badge. He was honorably discharged in November of 1952 with the rank of Master Sergeant.
In early 1953 he went to Southern California where he met his future wife to be, Barbara Betker who just so happened to be visiting Southern California at the same time. They lived and worked in Los Angeles for about a year, after which Dan went to work for the California Youth Authority (CYA) in May of 1954. He was with the CYA for the next 32 years. It was during this time that they bought their first home in Anaheim, California and had their three children. In 1974, Dan transferred to Northern California, and they purchased a home in Fair Oaks, California, which had been their home for the past 40 years.
Dan had a lifelong love of the outdoors, fishing, hunting, and camping; he built his own boat, which the family used for many years. He also enjoyed golf for many years, managing to get six hole in ones during his lifetime. In the 1950's, he got a private pilot's license and also made four parachute jumps.
