Darlene J. Hess-Calhoun ("Dar / Darzy") took her last breath peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her family on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at UCSF Medical Center, San Francisco, CA. She was 67 years old.
Darlene was born in Mercy Hospital in Redding CA to Ralph J. Hess and Harriet E. Rautter-Hess. Both parents preceded her death. Darlene is survived by her devoted husband of 29+ years, Bennie F. Calhoun; her cherished beloved daughter Angie Salveson (fiancé John Renslow); and her granddaughter and best friend, Kalina Salveson. Dar was an amazing Wife, Mamma, and Grandma.
Darlene is also survived by her loving brother, Larry Hess; sister Debbie Krieger; her step- children, Bennie (Karen) Calhoun, Jr.; Amy (Christopher) Bunn; step-grandchildren, Katie, Chelsea, Abbigale, Emily, Alyssa and Amelia; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends. Darlene was the spunky matriarch to our entire family and her friends always knew they were part of that family in every way. She took a huge piece of all our hearts with her to heaven.
Darlene was a long-time resident (30+ years) of Rocklin, CA and was fortunate to retire in 2001, as a manager with the U.S. Postal Service, after 20+ years of service. During retirement, her priority was spending time with family and friends. She loved to travel, garden, paint, play poker and all card/board games. Although retired, Darlene could not keep idle long. Her entrepreneurial spirit created the board game Brainstrain which took one of the first place positions at the 2000 US National MENSA Mind Game Competition and received the National Parenting Seal of Approval in 2001.
Darlene truly loved life and lived it to the fullest. She will always be remembered and treasured forever in our hearts.
