Dexter graduated from San Juan High School in 1946. Dexter Served in the US Army after high school. He was a military policeman during WWII and received an honorable discharge in 1948. Dexter graduated from Glad Tidings Bible Institute in Santa Cruz, CA where he met his first wife Lael Dolores Shuck.
Dexter and Lael married in Medford OR, June 22, 1952. After the wedding they moved to Costa Mesa CA where Dexter’s plan was to do graduate work in theology. In 1956 they moved to Santa Ana CA where they raised two daughters, Marcia and Karen. They later divorced in 1959. Dexter married his second wife, Phyllis Emma Mielke on August 6, 1961, in Boulder Creek CA. Settling in Citrus Heights CA, they had two children, James, and Colleen.
Dexter was an avid reader, loved vacationing in the mountains and taking trips to the coast. He enjoyed gardening and took pride mowing and trimming to make the yard look nice.
Dexter taught world history and social science at La Sierra High School from 1961 until the school closed in 1983. After that he taught at Mira Loma High School until his retirement in 1988. He was a volunteer facilitator for a book club for several years at Maidu center for the city of Roseville CA. He walked with the retirees, the “Maidu Walkers”, around Maidu Park and was a member of the “Maidu Singers”.
He also, taught Sunday School and sang in the choir at his local church. He loved to sing at wedding ceremonies. He was a volunteer at the Union Gospel Mission, for Prison Fellowship Ministries and was a member of the Gideons.
Dexter was the first born of three sons to Alton and Iva Healy. His brothers are Darwin Healy (1930-) and Carl Healy (1931-2018).
Dexter has 4 children. His children are Marcia Anne Healy Silva (1954- ) [John], Karen Suzanne Healy Ellis (1955- ) [Randal Glenn (1955-2015)], James Lowell Healy (1962- ) [Leah], Colleen Healy Oliver (1965- ) [Peter]
Dexter has 8 grandchildren, Nathan, Mathew, Sarah, Rachel, Amber, Joseph, Brian, and Kevin. He also has 15 great grandchildren.
