Donna Gayle Boyda, woman of remarkable strength, courage, and resilience, grew up in Springfield, CA. She was the eldest of three children, taking great pride in helping to raise her brothers, Duane and Darrell, who she affectionately called "a handful." Her father, Frank Boyd, was a dedicated teacher, and her mother, Iva Laughlin, a loving homemaker.
In 1958, Donna met her husband, George Powell, at Camp Pendleton in San Diego while he was serving in the Army. After their marriage, they moved to Ohio, George's home state, and together they had three daughters: Karin, Diana, and Kristy. Her journey led her back to California, where she dedicated her professional life to the California Prison Industries as a senior accounting officer. Upon retirement, she found a sense of joy and fulfillment in caring for her grandchildren, Corey and Kevin Hedlund, Jason Nickell Jessica Quinn and Megan Dicero, Anthony Dicero and Marnette Dicero. And we all know she had a significant name change when the great- grandchildren came along. She embraced the name of Gigi with immense pride when Wyatt, Colin and Aimee Hedlund along with Chase George, Dylan and Jaxon Nickell would call out to her. Her selfless acts toward her family paint a vivid picture of a woman who found joy in simple pleasures and shared them generously with those she loved. Her laughter, contagious and her smile would fill any room with warmth.
In 2023, Donna was diagnosed with breast cancer. She fought bravely for two years before peacefully passing away in Vacaville, CA. She is reunited now with her beloved brothers, Duane and Darrell, her ex-husband George, and her daughter Diana, who also passed away from breast cancer. Donna's youngest daughter, Kristy, shared these heartfelt words: "I always admired her strength, courage, and resilience, as she overcame many obstacles in her life. She was always there to listen or to offer a helping hand, and I have so many fond memories of birthday and holiday get-togethers at her house that I cherish to this day. I think my Mom would want to be remembered for her love and loyalty to her family and friends as that's what she cared about more than anything in life."
Family and Friends, As we say goodbye to Donna, let us carry her that love for family and laughter in our
