Born Dolores May Burlingame, February 7th, 1930, Doris, devoted daughter and loving mother, was called home by her Lord and Savior on March 13th after battling stomach cancer. She was preceded by Ralph Daniel Murphy (December 6th, 1986) her husband of 34 years. She is survived by her children Curtis, Kevin, Alan, Steve and Laurel (Lolly); her daughters-in-law Lisa, Marcia, Elsa and son-in-law Michael; her 13 grandchildren Josh, Kelly Ann, Brian, Megan, Steven, Vince, Stacie, Jake, Anthony, Christina (Crissy), Ryan, Matthew and Megan; her four great-grandchildren Josh Jr., Jasmine, Miya and Kierstyn; and innumerable others who count her a true and loving friend.
Born of mixed parentage at a time when such relegated her to "walk behind" status, Doris was an ordinary woman with an extraordinary effect. She lived life with an unquenchable desire to learn, laugh and love no matter what was in front of her. Most important, throughout her life she sought to comfort and lift up the spirits of those she saw as outcast or forgotten because she knew keenly what such treatment felt like. She was a teacher of life and other lessons whenever the opportunity arose and strove to create an environment where people felt loved and nurtured, no matter what age.
She was an achiever at all stages of her life: learned the alphabet by age three, started UCLA by age 16, became a pilot at age 53, achieved Tai Chi black sash at age 82. Diverse interests lead to wide-ranging experiences & pursuits such as: PTA President, knitter, seamstress, church van driver, puppeteer, baseball scorekeeper, aviatrix, gardener, horse rider, world traveler, piano player, martial artist, belly dancer, tennis player and many more. Her music interest ranged from Christian and classical to reggae.
Throughout all, and especially toward the end, she was sustained by an unwavering and abiding faith in the one True and Living God. This devotion produced a substance of character loved and admired by so many and why, with her passing, the common refrain is "there will never be another Doris!"
Please join us in the celebration of her life and influence at 10:00 am, Saturday March 30th, Mt. Vernon Memorial Park, Citrus Heights. Interment ceremony to follow immediately on-site and is open to all. Lastly, a lunch will be served at her Granite Bay home of 52 years.
