1927 - 2017
Jerry H. Sherrill went peacefully to his heavenly home on Nov. 01, 2017 while in the care of many respectful doctors and nurses at the Mather Veteran's Hospital, where he loved volunteering for 20 years and was well known by many.
Jerry was born in Kansas City, Kansas, to Hartwell Jones and Gertrude Mary Sherrill on Jan. 25, 1927. He grew up in Arkansas after his family moved there during the depression. Jerry was the 3rd born of 4 children:Truita, Cleo, Jerry, and Corinne.
In 1945 Jerry's uncle, a veteran of both World Wars, took his nephew Jerry to sign up for the Air Force, where he served for 20 years during WWII, Korea, and the Vietnam era. One of Jerry's most prestigious positions in the military was teaching the delivery of nuclear weapons while in the Strategic Air Command under General Curtis Lemay,
In 1958, while stationed in Japan, Jerry met and married his first wife, Ikuko Hasegawa. They were together 37 years until his wife's death in 1995. They had one daughter, Frances Maria born December 6th, 1963.
After retiring from military service, Jerry supported his family working for Pacific State Airline Services. During his 20 years of employment there he assisted in the planning, development, training, and organization of the Skycap Association. Among many of his work locations, Lake Tahoe was his favorite where he was assigned for several years.
Upon leaving PSAS, Jerry returned to his love of the military, being surrounded by military men and women, assisting and supporting them. He started several Amvet and VFW posts. In 1988 he served as Chairman of the 43rd Amvets Annual State Convention. As a Service Officer for Northern California, Jerry helped hundreds of veterans in preparation and submission of their claims involving benefits that exceeded thousands of dollars. Jerry touched the lives of so many people. He was called a walking recruiter, responsible for enlisting close to 1000 new members to Amvets and the VFW. His peers fondly referred to him as “The Money Man.”
Another one of Jerry's accomplishments was in 1996 where Jerry and his good friend, Lieutenant Colonel Floyd Knox, founded Veterans Assistance Network. Their mission was teaching disabled veterans how to use the new innovations of computers. Thanks to Jerry's mentorship, their organization continued to provide technology training to veterans well into the 21st century.
In 1997 Jerry met his second wife Linda when he helped her file a claim for her terminally ill husband. He and Linda married in 2005, and were together for a total of 19 years.
Jerry is preceded in death by his father Hartwell Jones, his mother Gertrude Mary, his sister Truita, his brother Cleo and his first wife Ikuko. Jerry is survived by his wife Linda, daughter Frances Maria, his sister Corinne Wake, many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
