Born on November 16, 1944in Springfield, Ohio to Ruth Steinhauer and Joseph Patterson II. Brother to Siblings: Sandy-Deceased at seven months old, Peggy Wingo, Janice Jordan and Nancy Alaniz.
Joe was married twice--the first to Audrey Tracy (deceased). They were married in 1965 in Reno, Nv. Second marriage to Louise (Talbot) Patterson on June 14, 1984. We were married in Joe's parents backyard. I carried a bouquet of Gardenias pick from their bush by Joe and his Dad. Our combined family of 5 children stood with us as we said our vows.
Joe attended Bella Vista High School and American River College.
He worked for most of his career as a sales representative for the water well pumping industry. He spent about 35 years making
sure that people had water when they needed it by keeping the drillers supplied with pumps. I know that his colleagues thought
very highly of his dedication to and knowledge of the field.
Joe was very proud of his service in the U.S. Marine Corps. He enlisted in July of 1963 and was honorably discharged
in October of 1965. When he came out of the service he had a wife and baby to support so he worked 2 jobs-as a materials handler at
McClellan AFB and at local gas station in the evening and weekends. He was a man who always accepted his responsibilities and tried his best to give his family a good life.
He was a longtime member of the American Legion.
Joe had a keen interest in and love of trains. From early childhood he loved watching, photographing and reading
about them. He had a model train layout about half completed in his "train room" (a spare bedroom in our home).
We enjoyed many trips to the Cal. State RailRoad Museum in Old Town Sacramento. Joe has been a member of
the museum since January of 1999. He has told me many stories of when he was a young boy he would ride his bike
to the tracks just to watch the trains. He loved the steam engines. When we took a trip or even just took a drive we had
to take the camera "just in case" we saw a neat train. We spent a lot of time watching trains. Our honey-
moon was a trip to Fort Bragg. We walked on the beach-one of our favorite things to do. And of course we took a ride on the
"Skunk Train". Just could not get away from those trains!
Joe loved to camp and spend time in nature. When he was younger he enjoyed hunting with his dad and brother-in-law
(Jim Wingo). As he got older he liked to hunt with a camera instead of a gun. He also liked to fish. His children talk
of their camping and fishing trips with him and how much fun they had. As a blended family we took several camping
trips together. We always had a wonderful time exploring nature.
Joe is survived by his wife- Louise Anne Patterson (maiden name Selquist, former married name Talbot). Also survived by children: Joseph Robert Patterson IV (Cyndi Martin), Clinton Douglas Patterson, Raginna Marie Patterson (Dion Hatten), Mona Gail (Talbot) Haddox (Eric Haddox). Grandchildren: Nicole Martin and Christopher Patterson (Joey's kids), David Nichols, Larissa Patterson, Alita Patterson and Athena Patterson (Clint's kids), Logan Hatten and Bailey Hatten (Raginna's kids), Elizabeth Talbot and Tyler Talbot (Mark's kids) (Mark Talbot is deceased), Erica Haddox and Jessen Haddox (Mona's kids).
Joe is survived by his father - Joseph Robert Patterson Jr. as well as the following sisters: Peggy Wingo (James Wingo), Janice Jordan (Larry Jordan), Nancy Alaniz (Nick Alaniz), He is also survived by many, many neices, nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles (to many to name).
Joe had many, many friends who will miss him. There are just too many to name here, but they know who they are.
Joe loved animals and had many pets over the years. Most recently he was "papa" to 3 beautiful cats.
Rowdy and Babe (who are no longer with us as they passed away of old age). And Schatzy, who still misses
curling up next to him in the middle of the night.
Joe was predeceased by:
Audrey Tracy - his first wife and mother of Joey, Clint and Gina. She died in December of 2013.
Mark David Talbot - son of Louise Patterson-Joe's stepson. He died in February 2014.
Ruth Marie Patterson -his mother. She died in August of 2010.
Sandra Patterson-his sister. She died in (I think) 1946.
I would like to thank all of those who have sent thoughts and prayers to the family as well as those who have provided support and
comfort to me during this difficult time.
"Those we love don't go away,
They walk beside us everyday,
Unseen, unheard, but always near,
Still loved, still missed and very dear."
I guess the three words that would sum up Joe's life would be--He lived, he laughed, he loved-- That's more than three but I
don't know how else to say it.
