Lola from Citrus Heights, CA, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 16 at the age of 104. Lola was known for her laughter and beautiful smile! She was the beloved wife of Frederick J. Boyd, for 35 years until he passed away from lymphoma cancer. She was the loving mother of Christy Dillemuth, Mel Boyd, Shelley Alestra and Fred Boyd Jr., loving Daughter of Anna Young Davis Smith and Levi Melvin Clay Davis, Sister of Lucille Thias.
Lola was blessed with 8 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, 9 great- great grandchildren and another great-great grandchild due in August totaling 10.
She was born in Pomona, CA and lived with her parents until her dad died when she was 5 and at that time the family of 3 went to stay with their Grandmother Anna Young Burnham. She had an uncle and three aunts on her mother’s side, and they were a close family through her childhood. In her youth Lola loved riding her bike, playing tennis, singing, and dancing. She met Fred in bible class and would only go out with him if he learned to dance. They married when she was 19 and shortly after he joined the Army Air Corps and was off to Boot Camp leaving her pregnant with their first child. Lola Christina Mae Boyd “Christy” for short”. She was born on June 22, 1943, and 2nd Child, Melvin Clay Boyd was born in 1946. The 3rd Child Shelley and 4th Child, Freddie came next in 1955 and 1957.
Her husband Fred’s career was a pilot and pilot trainer. They were transferred to many different locations including the Azores Islands in Portugal. During that two-year period Lola learned the millenary craft and sold her hats for many years. After Fred retired as a Lieutenant Colonel from the Air Force, he worked for the state of CA. They enjoyed square dancing and made a lot of wonderful friends. They would have many fun parties at their home playing fun games with their friends too!
After Fred passed away at 57 in 1978, Lola at 57 years old was a homemaker with only a high school diploma and had to find a job until her social security kicked in. She met George Freeman and had a happy second life for 33 years with him. They square danced, she made them matching outfits for that, had campouts with friends, digging for clams and roasting marshmallows. They also went on many cruises. George passed at 90 in 2012. Lola has been living on her own for 14 years with family support.
Lola dressed in style with everything that matched. Lola belonged to two Red Hat groups, the Well Bread Ladies and the River City Rubies, and she enjoyed going to lunch twice a month with them. She also attended New Life Church and went to social lunches, going to potlucks bringing her famous deviled eggs.
Lola was an inspiration and a blessing to many. To know her is to love her! Her long life was full of support from family and friends. Be it cooking fish at Pismo Beach Boyd family reunions, sewing, quilting and knitting for her daughters or taking the girls clothes shopping in San Francisco, fun was the main ingredient. Lola also enjoyed crafting and making beautiful cards on the computer, big birthday parties and playing cards and dominoes weekly with family. She will be missed but she will live on in our hearts forever.
