Born June 4, 1945 in Petaluma, California, and passed away unexpectedly in Carmichael early on the morning of August 21, 2020, Peggi graduated from Petaluma High School in 1963 and from California State University, Sacramento in 1967. After receiving her teaching credential in 1968, Peggi began her 35 year teaching career at Charles Mack School in Sacramento. During her tenure at Charles Mack School, she taught 1st grade, she was a Reading Recovery teacher, and she was a certificated school librarian. Following her retirement in 2003, she volunteered in the Charles Mack School Library for several years, where she continued to bring her love of reading to hundreds of elementary school children. Another passionate retirement activity was volunteering in elementary school classrooms in Penn Valley, where her daughter Beth is a teacher and her granddaughter Teran was a student.
While she practiced many forms of the needle arts, Peggi was an avid knitter, a skill she learned as a small child. She was a proud, founding member of the Sew and So’s, a sewing group that has met weekly (until the COVID-19 shelter-in-place) since February 1982. She was a great San Francisco Giants and Sacramento River Cats fan. She and her husband were River Cats season ticket holders for many years and Peggi kept score at the games. Peggi enjoyed travelling with her family. Special trips included a Bi-centennial trip across the country to Washington D.C. in 1976, a trip to Japan to visit the family of an exchange student the Gossetts had hosted, trips to Scotland and Ireland to investigate family history, and numerous trips throughout the United States. Peggi was a self-taught sign language interpreter. For over 30 years she was the primary interpreter of a weekly service at her church. She and her husband also ushered regularly for church services, including many Singing Christmas Tree performances. Peggi also enjoyed any activity that included extended family members. Annual Thanksgiving gatherings, family reunions, holiday trips to the cabin, and “Cousin Capers” to spring training are only a few of the events Peggi looked forward to over the years.
Peggi is survived by her sisters Maureen Fuller of Redding and Mila Murphy of Santa Clara; her daughters Beth (Kevin) Baker of Nevada City and Victoria (Ken) Allensworth of Sacramento; her step-daughter Paula (Jeff) Hunter of Rough and Ready; her granddaughter Teran Baker; her step-grandchildren Deken (Alison) Gossett, Jeff (Kristin) Hunter, and Jacob (Sierra) Hunter; step-great-grandchildren Sylvie, Gabriel, and June; and by numerous cousins.
Peggi was predeceased by her beloved husband Edward F. Gossett in 2014, to whom she was married for 44 years, by her parents Henry and Eleanor (Jessen) Murphy, and by her step-son Edward F. Gossett, Jr.
A private, family committal service has been held.
