11/7/1949 – 12/6/2020
Michael was born in Mills, CA, now known as Rancho Cordova, at Mather Air Force Base to parents George W. Schmid and Ila M. Schmid (nee Field), the oldest of two children. Michael attended San Juan High School (Class of1968) and upon graduation, he immediately enlisted in the US Army. Michael volunteered for action in Viet Nam, serving two tours, finally retiring after 22 years of service as a Sergeant First Class in 1994. During his distinguished military service, Michael became an expert marksman, a master parachutist, and was a proud member of the 82nd Airborne Division. Michael earned Bronze Star and three Purple Heart medals during his military career, and was particularly proud of serving in the Airborne Infantry.
Michael is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Patricia Schmid (Midkiff), his sister Sally and children Jason, Tracy, Jim and Colin; and seven grandchildren, who fondly referred to him as “Papa”.
To the end, Mike remained a loyal friend, a compelling story teller known for his bas knowledge of history and sense of humor, and only used his sergeant voice when necessary to make his point. As a veteran, he was an ongoing supporter of causes assisting those who have served – including the Wounded Warrior program AND Wounded Paws, among others. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in Michael's name to the Wounded Warior Project or the Wounded Paws Project.
