Cross, Robert – Resident of Fair Oaks. Entered into life on May 10, 1947 in Lynwood, California. Entered into rest on September 20, 2012. A Funeral Service will be held on Friday, October 5, 2012 at 1pm at Mount Vernon Memorial Park.
I’m sure by now most of you have heard that Bob passed away on Thursday, September 20, 2012. It has taken me these last few days to sort through the emotions to get this message of heart-felt gratitude out to all of you.
Bob’s last few days are still a bit of a blur. We were so confident that the stem cell transplant was working. His blood counts were mostly on the rise, thanks to the great gif
t of stem cells from his sister, Judy. He was in the hospital for some tests for a nagging cough. No big deal. Tuesday evening, as he visited the bathroom, he had a heart attack as a result of a blood clot. Completely unrelated events. Sadly, over the next day, despite all of your and our hopes and prayers his body sustained too much damage to recover. While we all expected to have many more years with Bob as his bone marrow replenished itself, this sudden event stole him from us.
While the end came suddenly, I will never forget all that you have done for Bob, me and the family over the last 5 years since the cancer was diagnosed. We had so many expressions of love through that time...it fills my heart now to look back on it. I am so blessed to have all of you in my life; Bob was just as grateful. I can’t say “thank you” enough. You gave us strength, love and a whole lot of laughter. I think it was the laughter that Bob cherished the most and helped him stay so positive.
But as you all know, Bob never let the cancer define him. He loved every minute of life. He loved our trips with family and friends, San Blas Island, Africa, Canada, Alaska, our amazing honeymoon in Tahiti, and especially Mexico. He loved cars, polishing each and every bolt in the ’55 Chevy, and admiring the handiwork of others who shared this passion. He loved a good wine and was always eager to open that next bottle to share with his friends. But most of all he loved all of you. Family and friends meant everything to him from the day we met until his dying day. Please don’t ever forget that. Even as your heart breaks as mine has, take a minute to remember the joy he brought to this world and to each of you. That’s just how he’d want it.
To both say goodbye and to celebrate his life, we’ll be having a memorial and graveside service at Mount Vernon Mortuary (on Greenback) at 1 o’clock on Friday, October 5th. Following will be a Celebration of Life gathering at Pam and Bobs home.
