

Shirley Diana Houston Courtney passed away peacefully in Sacramento on June 22, 2017 at the age of 81 after a courageous battle for over 17 years with Parkinson’s disease. She was born on Oct. 17, 1935 in Shelton, Nebraska in her grandmother’s home. She moved to California in 1937, grew up in El Dorado county and after high school moved to Sacramento. She is preceded in death by her beloved mother, Lucille Gladys (Hunt) Houston Bennett, her cherished father Ivan Lorraine Houston, and her dear stepfather Wilbur Bennett. She is survived by her devoted husband of 61 years Bill Courtney; her brother Ronald Houston (Pat); her three children Jan Courtney Millner (Steve), Bret Courtney (Cheryl), and Marty Courtney (Debbie); her four grandchildren: Ben Millner, Matt Millner (Melissa), Sean Courtney, Spenser Courtney; and three great-grandchildren: Sophia Millner, Milo Millner, and Madeleine Millner. Shirley worked at Bank of America for many years and following that owned “Cotton & Lace Boutique” gift shop. She and Bill enjoyed traveling to Hawaii and Lake Tahoe, and she was an avid golfer. She was a proud graduate of El Dorado High School and regularly attended reunions and cherished her friendships with classmates. She will be missed by her many, many close and loving friends and extended family. The family is very grateful for the kind, loving care Shirley received at Carlton Plaza Memory Care, Sacramento. A memorial service celebrating Shirley’s life will be at Mount Vernon Memorial Park in Fair Oaks on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in the family chapel.
