Steve Goins, 70, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2025, in Fair Oaks, California. Born on May 12, 1955, in San Francisco, California, Steve lived a life marked by dedication to his family, his community, and the people he served throughout his career.
Steve devoted his professional life to public service as a 911 dispatcher for the Sacramento Sheriff's Department. His calm demeanor and steady presence made him a trusted voice during moments of crisis. Beyond answering emergency calls, Steve played a vital role in shaping the next generation of dispatchers through training and mentorship. He also managed multiple service centers and coordinated the efforts of many sheriff volunteers, ensuring that communities received timely and compassionate police support. He was a well loved and reliable employee with the Sheriff’s Department for over 25 years.
At home, Steve was the heart of his family. He is survived by his beloved wife Karen; his son Brian and his partner Kelly; his daughter Lindsay and son-in-law Tom; and his cherished grandchildren Ellie, Henry, and Evie. He is also survived by his younger brother, Greg. Steve’s devotion to his family was unwavering—he was deeply involved in their lives and took immense joy in being present for every milestone. Within an hour of Ellie being born, Steve was already meeting her, and within months of her birth he decided to retire!
To his grandchildren, Steve was more than just a grandfather—he was a constant source of love, laughter, and support. Whether driving them to activities or joining them on school field trips, he embraced every opportunity to be with them. At their preschool, he became a beloved figure—so much so that he was requested for every outing. When the children saw him coming they would yell “Grandpa Steve!”. His granddaughter Evie would often cry if someone other than Grandpa picked her up from school—a testament to the special bond they shared.
Steve’s interests reflected his vibrant spirit. A lifelong fan of the San Francisco Giants, he followed baseball with passion. He found peace in gardening and joy in exploring the world through travel. He and Karen hosted a year long exchange student from Germany, Petra, who continues to be a close member of our family today. His curiosity about family history led him to genealogy research—a pursuit that connected him more deeply with generations past. He even published 2 books- one on his research into his family’s past and one of his own experiences in life.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Bonnie Goins.
Those who knew Steve remember him as intelligent, kind-hearted and thoughtful—always ready to lend a hand or offer words of encouragement. He loved to help others research and plan their own travel adventures. His legacy lives on not only through the family he loved so dearly but also through the many lives he touched with compassion and care. He donated to countless causes that were near and dear to his heart and taught his children not only to donate generously to those less fortunate, but to tip generously as well!
A grave side memorial service celebrating Steve’s life will be held in Fair Oaks, California. Please contact the family for further details. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to one of the many causes he supported.
May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him and continue to inspire acts of kindness for years to come.
