He was 94 years old. He was preceded in death by his wife Beatrice Lee and his five siblings: William (Betty), May (Edward), Anna (Ben), and Albert Fong. He is survived by his three sister in laws (Betty, Margaret and Sandy), four loving children, Monalee (Robert), Donalee, Leighton (Anna) and Victor (Amelia); eleven grandchildren, three great grandchildren, countless nephews, nieces and friends.
Private First Class Wallace B.W. Fong joined the U. S. Army in 1951, fought in the Korean War where he was shot and injured, received the Purple Heart and was honorably discharged in 1956. Wally and Bea were introduced by a family friend, went out for sushi on their first date, ditched class to see “Love Is A Many Splendored Thing” and were married 3 months later on July 28, 1955 in Reno, Nevada. Together they raised 4 children and lived in Sacramento on Potrero Way for over 45 years. Beatrice raised her children at home, volunteered at the PTA and Wally worked for both the State of California for over 40 years and the Retail Clerks (UFCW 588) for nearly 10 years.
In retirement, Wally spent his time babysitting his first two grandsons in their early years. Wally also volunteered for 3 military organizations; Chapter #385 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, American Legion Gung Ho Post #696 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Chung Mei Post #8358. Wally was a lifetime member for all 3 organizations and was passionate and proud of being a veteran. He held the position of Commander for the Gung Ho Post for nearly 10 years from 2004 to 2013. Wally attended weekly meetings, volunteered for fundraisings at Old Sacramento, the Sacramento State Fair and with his wife by his side, were major contributors of the Veterans Memorial Plaza at the VA Hospital in Rancho Cordova. Wally was also involved with the Fong Association for the Sacramento Chapter. Family was his number one priority and no one could make him smile more than his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was extremely proud of all of them. Other than his family, he was most proud of serving his country in the U.S. Army.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday March 23, 11 am at Mt. Vernon Mortuary, 8201 Greenback Lane, Fair Oaks, CA.
