However you knew her, if you called her Yolanda, YoYo, Joan, Mommy, Nana…Yolanda Ingrid Joan Edeling was born in Jakarta, Indonesia to Bernardine and Carel Edeling on August 30th, 1951. She was the third of four children, oldest sister Conny, Inga, and youngest brother Ben. She came to America when she was just 8 years old. She became a naturalized citizen in 1967, she graduated from Morningside High School in Inglewood, California. She lived in various cities in Southern California before finally moving closer to her daughter and grandson in Sacramento in 1997. Living in Sacramento, Joan worked for many companies, but finally retired from the State of California’s EDD office Rancho Cordova, California. She was a beloved member of Bayside Life Church in Rancho Cordova, where she rededicated her life to Christ on September 20th, 2009 and embraced her church family and her newly established relationship with God.Joan was a simple person, who loved the simple things in life. She was a devoted mother, nana, and friend. She taught her daughter how to be a strong independent women capable of standing on her own two feet if necessary. She believed in good communication, ALWAYS speaking what’s on your mind, and made sure her daughter did the same. She supported whatever decision (good or bad) her daughter made, but made sure her opinion was definitely heard on whatever the matter. Her daughter, Jennifer is the women she is today, because the Lord blessed her to be born to the strong 5 foot 1 inch wonder, spit fire of lady that ever graced our presence.“I AM MY MOTHER’S DAUGHTER” Jen always says.Joan made sure to give lots of hugs and kisses, “SHOWING you love is always better than saying it, that was the proof of your love” she always said. All that love was showered over her grandson when he was born, right up until the day she passed away. She was THE MOST PROUD NANA (not grandma) you will have ever known. Before her grandson was born, she told her daughter, “now I am too young to be a grandma, so I will be called Nana”. And so goes the start of the most beautiful relationship between grandson and grandmother. If anyone who knew Yolanda/Joan, you knew who her Boo was. There was that special bond not even her daughter could argue. There are tee shirts that says, Whatever mommy and Daddy don‘t get me, My Nana Will - If mommy said no, Nana said Yes. And that was so true when it came to her boo. Whatever it was he wanted, whatever he asked for, nana said yes. If it was in her power, she would do it. “Reach for Stars” she told her boo, “you can do anything you put your mind too“. She loved horseback riding, sushi (especially fried shrimp heads from Mikuni’s), she loved going to the Wonderful Chinese restaurant in Elk Grove, buying and watching movies with her boo. She wasn’t the type to be fussed over but love to be loved on. She loved to cook for her family, she would often bribe them to come over with dishes like sour kraut, nasi goreng, sheppards pie, and occasional pot of greens for her son-in-law. She loved to drink hot tea with honey…never sugar always honey. She loved to go thrift store shopping where she found the “best bargains” as she put it. Her last shopping spree was with her daughter, Ailene Short and Sophia (her grand puppy). She told her daughter, she had so much fun that day and couldn’t wait for the next one. Simple things in life is what made her happy, like a Jamba Juice run, frozen yogurt, going to the movies with her boo.Yes that was Yolanda Joan EdelingSWEET….SIMPLE…and LOVED FROM HER HEARTShe is survived by her daughter Jennifer Stewart, her grandson Jonathan “Boo” Bowie, her son-in-law Calvin Stewart, her nephews, nieces and countless friends and family.
