Dear Elsa & Family, My deepest sympathies go out to you and your family. May God give you the peace that you seek. The Vela family holds a very special place in my heart, I first met your family during the late 1960's and was instantly impacted by the entire families warm hospitality. Hito & I played baseball together on a little league team, Hito's father Mr. Alberto Sr., my father and I went hunting on several occasions and Ms. Vela always provided comfort food for us to enjoy! Your family has always welcomed me into their homes just like I was a family member, I will never forget this kindness! Sincerely, GW Colvin

I remember, we were at a family wedding back in the early 2000s. I was in line getting drinks for my parents and my date and myself. Hito was in line directly behind me. After I placed my order and it was made, I learned the open bar had just closed, and it had become a cash bar. The tip money I had was insufficient to cover the price. They wouldn't accept plastic. Before I could run to gather cash, Hito recognized what was happening, stepped up, and asked the bartender how much it was and paid for my order. I tried giving him the cash I had, but he refused to accept it. He looked at me and right then and there, he said to me "hey, we are all family here. We take care of each other. Don't worry about it."

As trivial as this may have been, this memory truly resonated with me. Not just when I'd see him over the years - but when I got to see and hang out with my cousins Robert, Becky, Eliberto Jr., and Elisa.

I'm extremely sad to hear of Hito leaving us. My condolensces and prayers are with the entire Vela family, especially Elsa and and each of my cousins.
