Martha Lockey Hise Smith Flaming 94, of Falfurrias, was called Home Thursday, October 9, 2014 in New Braunfels, TX where she had been residing at Gruene Senior Living for the past 3 months. Martha was born September 13, 1920 in Falfurrias, TX to Lockey E. Shuford and Luther J Hise who were early settlers in Brooks County. She married Willard A. “Woody” Smith on March 23, 1941 and never slowed down. He preceded her in death June 1, 1985 after 44 years of marriage. At the age of 80 she married Joel A Flaming March 19, 2001 who preceded her death December 11, 2008. Martha loved the Lord, her family and music. She began to serve the Lord very young in life playing the piano for the First Baptist Church Falfurrias at the age of twelve and continued playing at church for 80 more years. She also played for weddings, funerals, high school graduations and senior baccalaureate services from the time of her high school graduation in 1939 (she played for her own graduation ceremony) until she was in her mid-eighties. She was a secretary/aid for the Falfurrias High School Band for many years where she accompanied students for UIL Solo/Ensemble completion. In 2003 she was honored by the Corpus Christi Caller Times with a Jefferson Volunteer Award for service to her community. She is survived by one brother Ross (Zora Mae) Hise, Austin, TX; one sister-in-law Mary Nell Hise, Granbury, TX; numerous loving nieces and nephews; seven children: Mary Evelyn (Jerry) Jones, Andrews, TX; Robert (Becci) Smith, Caldwell, TX; David (Jackie) Smith, Bonners Ferry, ID; Edward (LaVerne) Smith, Sandia, TX; Richard (Christal) Smith, New Braunfels, TX; Douglas (June) Smith, San Antonio, TX; DiAnna (Mike) Adams, Navasota, TX; 23 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren and 6 great, great grandchildren; two stepchildren: Jerry (Lucy) Flaming, Concepcion, TX; Carolyn (Jeffery) Ashcraft, Corpus Christi, TX and numerous step grand/great grandchildren. Martha was a true Proverbs 31 woman. She loved and served everyone generously and was greatly loved by her family, friends and all who knew her. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14 the Apostle Paul says “But, I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For “we believe”…..as you did dear Mother… “so God will bring with him those who sleep in Jesus.” Mom, we know you are playing for Jesus right now, in His presence, on the grandest piano ever. We will see you again. Pallbearers will be her grandsons. Viewing will be from 4:00p.m. till 7:00 p.m. Sunday, October 12, 2014 at the Funeraria Del Angel Howard Williams. Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday October 13, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church of Falfurrias, interment will follow at the Falfurrias Burial Park.
