Daniel Elmo Bare, age 87, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2026. He was born on January 19, 1939, in Detroit, Michigan, and was the adopted son of the Rev. John I. Bare and Mrs. Vera Bare of Saginaw, Michigan.
Dan graduated from Arthur Hill High School in Saginaw, Michigan, in 1957. He earned his bachelor's degree from Michigan State University in 1965 and later completed a Masters of Arts degree from Eastern Michigan University in 1988.
Dan dedicated more than 30 years to teaching sixth-grade science at Bentley Middle School in Burton, Michigan. Following his retirement, he continued sharing his knowledge by teaching computer classes at Baker College Flint campus for more than 15 years.
Throughout his life, Dan pursued many passions. He was an avid sailor and a charter member of the Huron Yacht Club and completed multiple single-handed Port Huron to Mackinac races where he placed second and third in his division. He also enjoyed woodworking as a member of the Eastern Michigan Woodworkers and enjoyed projects like Sam Maloof chairs, cradles, and other intricate pieces. At the age of 83, he discovered a new passion when he began learning to play the guitar with his daughter, Debra, long distance via FaceTime.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. John I. Bare and Vera Bare; and his biological parents, Joe Willett and Marjorie Atkinson; his son, Douglas Bare; half-brothers, Tony Willett and Joe Morissette Jr., dearest cousin Bruce Rosa, and half sister-in-law, Yvonne Willett.
Daniel leaves behind his wife of 42 years, Chiho Bare; his children, Daniel Bare Jr. (Shyla), Deanna Bare, Debra Cochran, and John Bare; his half-siblings, Jodeen Cromie, Sam Willett, and Winnie Borgman; six grandchildren, Jessica Tanner (Chris), Devyn Bare (Ashley), Taylor Cochran, Michael Foster, Jr, Jonathan Foster, and Scott Short III; and eight wonderful great-grandchildren.
The family kindly requests that memorial contributions in Daniel's honor be made to Holy Cross Lutheran Church of Flushing, the Paralyzed Veterans of America, and the Salvation Army.
Visitation will be held on July 11, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Reigle Funeral Home, 5501 Pierson Rd., Flushing, MI, with the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. concluding at approximately noon. Interment will take place at 2:00 p.m. at Flint Memorial Park, located at 9506 N. Dort Hwy, Mt. Morris, MI.
