

Frances Dianne Schimmel, lovingly known as Fran, passed away at the age of 82 on May 18, 2026, at MidMichigan Medical Center-Clare. She was born on May 23, 1943, in Mt. Clemens, Michigan, to the late Salvatore and Rosemary (Sebold) Pomante.
Fran's life was marked by her dedication to education and her passion for music. After graduating from high school in 1961, she attended Marygrove College, where she earned her Master’s degree in 1966. That same year, she married the love of her life, Jim Schimmel, and together they welcomed their daughter, Marie, in 1974. Fran’s teaching career began at Mt. Clemens, where she inspired countless students from 1966 to 1979 before taking on a role with the Gerrish Higgins School District and later with the Michigan Department of Corrections. She retired in 2002, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and compassion.
A classically trained opera singer, Fran had a profound love for music that enriched her life and the lives of those around her. She also cherished reading and had a special place in her heart for sunflowers and trips to the casino, where she brought joy and laughter to all.
Fran is survived by her beloved daughter, Marie Schimmel; her son, Gary (Beth) Stoneburner; her brother, Michael (Betty) Pomante; her granddaughter, Madison (Dylan) Schimmel; and her grandson, Trenton Tasker. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, James (Jim) Schimmel, who passed away in April 2025.
In honor of Frances’ life, a service will be held at Fort Custer National Cemetery, 15501 West Dickman Road, Augusta, MI 49012, on June 1, 2026, at 12:00 pm., Michigan. Family and friends are invited to join in celebrating the loving memory of a remarkable woman whose kindness and spirit touched the lives of many.
