Richard Edward Klapko

Richard Edward Klapko, age 90, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 19, 2025. A devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, and proud American, he lived a life marked by service, generosity, and unwavering kindness.

A veteran of the United States military, Richard exemplified patriotism and selflessness from a young age. After his time in service, he continued to give back as a dedicated universal blood donor with the American Red Cross, earning awards for his countless life-saving contributions. His commitment to helping others knew no bounds—he was the kind of man who would give you the shirt off his back without a second thought.

For fifty-four years, Richard worked at General Motors, where he was a proud and active member of UAW Local 1292. He brought a craftsman's precision and pride to everything he did, including woodworking and other hands-on projects that showcased his skill and creativity.

A man of deep faith, he was a longtime member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Mount Morris, having begun his spiritual journey at Sacred Heart Parish. His strong Catholic values were also reflected in his membership with the Knights of Columbus, where he lived out his faith in action.

He loved the outdoors and found joy in gardening, spending time in nature, and especially deer hunting—an avid sportsman. He rarely missed a crossword puzzle and was a lifelong sports fan, always cheering on his favorite teams with passion.

Known for never meeting a stranger, Richard had a heart as big as his smile. His life was a testament to the simple but powerful values of kindness, humility, and paying it forward. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and service that will live on in all who knew him.

Richard is survived by his children: Anne (Paul) Stokes, Richard Klapko and Charles (Heather Chipman) Klapko; grandchildren: Ryan (Natalie) Gertiser, Elizabeth Elliott, Remington Klapko, Lauren (Sal Chavez) Stokes, PJ Stokes, Christian Gilko and Katlain Gilko; great-grandchildren: Kaedence Gertiser, Easton Gertiser, Lacey Gertiser, Olivia Elliott, Evan Elliott and Valentina Chavez.

Richard was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-four years Barbara and daughter Mary Klapko.

A memorial visitation for Richard will be held on Friday, August 29, 2025, at Reigle Funeral Home/Sunset Chapel - 5501 W. Pierson Road, Flushing, Michigan at 11:30AM. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 PM, and officiated by Father Roy Horning. Following the memorial service, Richard will be inurned next to his beloved wife, Barbara, at New Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Flint, Michigan.
