

Barbara J Slechter-Meyer passed away peacefully on January 12th, 2024. She was the loving companion of Peter Giacalone. Barbara is survived by the Giacalone family, friends, and many music students and associates. Barbara was a piano and accordion Teacher at Lincoln Conservatory, and the International School of Music. She won state accordion championships in addition to many other awards national and international. Peter and Barbara met through music competitions from their rival schools in the late 70s.
Barbara was the prior owner of the Lincoln Conservatory of Music School in Chicago and Peter owned the International School of Music in Cicero, IL. Once the Lincoln Conservatory closed, Peter had invited Barbara to come and teach at the International School of Music in Cicero, IL. At the International School of Music, Peter and Barbara worked together and won many competitions local, state and national. Barbara was the concertmaster in the International Accordioneers that won the International Show band competition in the late 80s, early 90s that was held in Chicago. Barbara and Peter’s music was donated to The World of Accordions Museum in Superior Wisconsin. Barbara was also a member of Accordionists and Teachers Guild International, American Accordion Association, Illinois Music Association and the Chicago Accordion Club. She will be missed dearly by all who knew her.
Friends and family will gather for a visitation for Barbara that will be held on Monday, January 22nd, 2024, from 4 - 8 pm at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 7750 West Cermak Road, Forest Park, Illinois, 60130. A morning visitation will take place Tuesday, January 23rd, 2024 at 8:30am at Woodlawn Funeral Home, following in procession to Divine Infant Jesus Catholic Church, 1601 Newcastle Avenue, Westchester, Illinois 60154 for the Funeral Mass starting promptly at 10am.
In lieu of flowers donations appreciated to the Chicago Accordion Club.
The family will be having a private Interment.
