Born on April 2, 1958, in Berwyn, Illinois, Phil was the son of the late Frank D. Vana and Theresa B. Vana (Platek). He attended Morton East High School before beginning a career in the corrugated packaging industry. Starting with the hands-on craft of making steel-rule dies, Phil built a lifelong career that eventually led him to become a Customer Service Manager at Converting Technology, Inc., where he later retired.
Phil wasn't the loudest person in the room. In fact, he'd probably avoid the room altogether if there were too many people talking. He was an observer, a problem solver, a protector, and a man who showed his love through actions rather than words. Those who knew him understood that a glance, a smile, or one of his familiar looks often said more than words ever could. With a dry sense of humor, a sarcastic wit, and a stubborn streak, he had a way of teasing the people he loved while always being the one they could count on when something needed fixing.
Phil shared 48 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Sharon M. Vana (Sasso). Together they enjoyed countless vacations, always making sure there was a lake nearby. Fishing was where Phil found peace. Whether from a rented boat, a quiet pier, or the shoreline, he was happiest with a fishing pole in his hand. He especially treasured fishing with his grandson, Trevor, and looked forward to many more trips together.
Phil is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Sharon M. Vana (Sasso); his daughter, Tracy L. Johnson (Vana), and her husband, Michael S. Johnson; his son, Christopher F. Vana, and his wife, Sarah Vana (Muraida); his cherished grandson, Trevor Vana; his brother, Glenn A. Vana and his wife, Janet Vana (Darre); his sister, Laura Shapiro (Vana); and many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank D. Vana and Theresa B. Vana (Platek); his infant daughter, Kimberly L. Vana, who was born sleeping on September 28, 1988; and his brother-in-law, Hal Shapiro.
Those who knew Phil will remember a quiet man with a teasing smile, a stubborn spirit, and a heart that loved deeply without needing to say much. His family will think of him whenever the water is still and the first ripple breaks across a quiet lake. They find comfort in imagining that, after all these years, he is finally holding Kimberly in his arms. That is where it will always be easiest to picture him at peace.
