Susan Talaber (Nielsen) passed away on May 3rd, 2025, at her home in Oak Park, surrounded by loved ones. Susan was a long-time resident of Oak Park, attending Lincoln Elementary School, OPRF, and the University of Illinois – Chicago, where she graduated in Criminal Justice.
Susan is survived by her beloved husband of almost 50 years, Frank Talaber; three daughters, Melissa (Matwyshyn), Leah, and Elisabeth Talaber; her three granddaughters, Mathilda, Sofia, and Mikayla; and her brother, Erik Nielsen. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alyce and Wayne Nielsen.
Susan was a dedicated wife and mother who consistently gave her time and energy to those around her. Her warmth and generosity touched the lives of many, whether through a caring note or by being a steadfast supporter in times of need. Those who knew her well appreciated her great sense of humor.
Susan had a variety of interests that enriched her life. She enjoyed sewing, even doing her own alterations as a teenager, swimming, and taking long walks—activities that allowed her to express creativity, maintain health, and find peace. Susan was captivated by the night sky, especially when it displayed a lovely full moon. She cherished visiting special places in Wisconsin and later Indiana, rooted in warm childhood memories with her grandparents. These trips were a testament to her deep appreciation for family and the past.
Susan demonstrated self-reliance and valued her independence from a very early age. She was a loving mentor to her friends, one of whom lovingly recalls she’d still be relying on public transportation if Susan had not encouraged her to get her driver's license, even escorting her to the DMV.
Her love for animals was a trait she inherited from her mother, and it was evident in the way she cared for the many pets over the years. Despite her many admirable qualities, Susan remained humble and reserved, never seeking the spotlight but always making a significant impact on those fortunate enough to know her.
We invite you to join us to celebrate Susan’s life at an open house on Sunday, June 22nd, from 2:00-6:00 pm at 1008 Wenonah Avenue, Oak Park, Illinois. This will be a time to gather, share memories, and honor the beautiful impact Susan had on all of us.
