Vanessa was one of the first African American students to sing in the choir at the University of Alabama. She later played for the first gospel choir there. When she transferred to Stillman College where she studied with Prof. James Arthur Williams, it changed her life. Vanessa was celebrated at Stillman College and at Bailey Tabernacle CME church in Tuscaloosa. She possessed an incredible voice and a very unique keyboard style. She was a great educator and colleague. She hosted the highly acclaimed Central State University Chorus from Ohio when she served as music director at Walls Memorial CME Church. She was highly respected in her fIeld. As a retired college professor of music and current professional artist, I am proud to have known and worked with this phenomenal women. Prof. William Henry Caldwell.
