Dear Mama,

It's hard for me to say goodbye. I will always cherish the time we had together. Thank you for taking me into you home, taking care of me without assistance from anyone. You taught me a great deal about life. I learned so much about taking care of others from you. Thank you mama! You are forever the best. Love you.

My Other Mother

You are the other Mother I received,
The day I wed your son
And I want to thank you Momma,
For the loving things, you’ve done.

You’ve given me a gracious Man,
With whom I share my life
You are his Mother,
And I his Wife.

You used to pat his little head,
And now I hold his hand
You raised in love a little boy,
And then gave me a Man.

Love always until we meet again.
Your loving Daughter-in-Law

Moma,

I dedicated my life to honor and respect you. You deposited so many wonderful things into my being. I thank you for the Reader’s Digest you would bring home to me each week from work. You wanted me to expand my vocabulary by learning Word Power Made Easy (20 new words and definitions weekly).

At a time when it was not popular to do so, you found money from somewhere so that your children would have educational material above and beyond what the schools provided. I remember the Britannica Encyclopedia (Cyclo-Teacher) and The Negro Heritage book collections you bought us. You ignited a fire in me that has translated into a life-long learning philosophy.

When I was a little boy you looked like a Giant to me. When I became a Man, I understood you being a Giant had little to do with your stature but more to do with the loving and giving person; that I along with countless others whose life you touched, came to know and love.

You encouraged me to pursue a relationship with God by making sure I went to Church and by reciting scriptures to me over the years. You loved the Lord and I know you are with Him because you fulfilled Jesus's Greatest Commandments.

Many times throughout my life there have been people who misunderstood me, didn’t believe in me and tried to destroy anything concerning me. You inspired me to motivate myself regardless of the circumstances. The most memorable advice you gave to me, as a 13 year-old boy was whenever I was attacked, talked about, and or miss-judged, “Prove Them Wrong!” It has been the cornerstone of my life’s path. You also taught me that as long as I know the truth and God knows, nothing and no one else matters. I love you Moma and am grateful for the 60 plus years God has allowed me to be in your presence and under your guidance, your loving Son, Charlie!
