Phyllis L Bates
Was born to Ivory and Theary Douglas on April 22 1934 in Oklahoma she was the second child of four children. The family moved to Chicago Illinois.
An intelligent young girl with a great love for education, life, creativity, family and learning new things. Phyllis was somewhat shy, growing up she didn’t have a lot of friends. But preferred spending time with her sisters and little brother anyway. As a teenager she was very athletic and she loved outdoor sports and was very adventurous. She met and married David Bates and from their union they had four children whom she affectionately called Monte, Terrie, Stevie, and Johnnie. She believed in family, God, faith and made sure her children knew the same. She always loved going new places and having a change of scenery. For a brief moment she lived outside of Santa Barbara, in Goleta California. But she returned to Chicago to help care for her mother and to be closer to family. She worked for a government program for the Health, Education & Welfare of women and children. After retiring from the United States Post Office, she settled in Lehigh Acres Florida with her Mother and her son Monte. The rest of her immediate family soon followed and settled in Jacksonville Florida where her daughter Theresa already resides.
Phyllis loved the spice of life and you could tell just by her delicious cooking. She’s enjoyed business consulting, traveling, road trips, cruising, scuba diving, snorkeling, camping, fashion, health eating, beauty, swimming, interior decorating, hospitality, and hanging at Home Depot. She once was yoga instructor at the YMCA in Chicago.
Phyllis was well respected by her family and community alike.
Her contribution to the lives of many included the creation or of several different programs and activities. With the hopes of being able to resolve issues and problems constructively for a lost team or child she worked and volunteered with the National Runaway Switchboard. She volunteered with the youth ministry at her church and the elementary school nearby.
On October 6th, God called His beautiful daughter home to rest in His loving arms.
Her parents, siblings Ivory Jean Douglas, Exelona Hubbard (Hubert), her brother John Douglas and son Steven Bates preceded her in death.
She leaves to cherish her loving memories Her husband David, devoted son David LaMonte, devoted daughter Theresa Lynn, and son John Wilson SR (Dale). Her two grandsons John Wilson JR (Dominique) and Christian. Her two great grandchildren Johnna Monae and John Wilson III and one grand puppy named Jacks. Her nephew Jonathan Douglas (Deloris) and niece Heidi Dillon (Easton), Her Dearest Golden Girls Palmer, Dalla, Alameda, and other family and friends.
