Eugene C. Loop

Eugene Christopher Loop, known to those closest to him as Chris, passed away on July 16, 2026, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, at the age of 77. He was born on October 22, 1948, in Berkeley, California, to Eugene Boyer Loop and Joanne Alice Buchanan, and lived a life defined by intellectual curiosity, religious faith, and a lifelong devotion to learning.

Chris pursued his education at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, where he earned a degree in Applied Mathematics, followed by a degree in Computer Engineering from Santa Clara University. He went on to build a distinguished career as a computer engineer, contributing his talents to respected organizations including Lockheed and ITT. In retirement, rather than slow down, he returned to the classroom at Purdue University Fort Wayne, earning a Master of Science in Mathematics, a testament to a mind that never stopped seeking to learn and grow.

He had a particular love of mathematics and science fiction and found deep satisfaction in study and the pursuit of knowledge throughout his life. He was a life-long member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a community central to his identity that shaped his values and his sense of purpose throughout his life.

Chris is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Mary Ann Spencer Loop, whom he married on August 28, 1971, in the Oakland California Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; his daughter, Mary Laura Hart; his son, Eugene Mark Loop; his granddaughters, Alexandria Rain and Juniper Noel; and his two brothers, Gary Gordon Loop and Craig Boyer Loop.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Highland Park Cemetery, 2403 E. Wallen Road, Fort Wayne, Indiana 46825. Those wishing to honor his memory with flowers may do so through Hockemeyer and Miller Funeral Home via www.dignitymemorial.com.
