Joan was a proud graduate of Greensburg High School and Indiana University - Bloomington (’47), BS in Education. She always wanted to be a teacher and lived that dream teaching Home Economics at Arlington, Clinton and Elwood High Schools.
While the Cheerleader Director at Elwood H.S. she met Fred Domrow, the love of her life, who was the Band Director at rival Tipton H.S.. They were married in 1956. Not long after they moved to Fort Wayne.
Joan and Fred had two boys, Brian and Greg. She wanted 5 boys but this was not to be. Greg passed at the tender age of 6 from Aplastic Anemia. Joan loved children and following that heartbreak she taught for 20 years in the Fort Wayne Community Schools as a long term assignment Substitute Teacher. Brian is a graduate of Indiana University - Bloomington, retired and living in Fort Wayne. She is also survived by beloved nieces and nephews.
Joan and Fred were faithful members of Bethlehem Lutheran Church for nearly 60 years, prior to which they were members of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. They loved both congregations.
Joan was a reluctant traveler who cherished her home life. Fred wanted nothing more than to be with Joan traveling the world. Joan would willingly go on that inevitable next trip to take care of Fred. Upon return she always seemed to truly enjoy the adventures but primarily it was the people and friends she met along the way.
Joan and Fred were baseball fans. Joan a Reds fan and Fred a Cubs fan from Chicago lead to many enjoyable times. Although Joan was rarely charitable with her thoughts about the Cubs quality. They migrated to the Phoenix area for parts of nearly 20 winters to enjoy lazy Spring Training game days with friends under the beautiful desert sun.
Joan had a stroke in 2020 that left her with Vascular Dementia and other conditions. Through it all she still found some joy in living. This was in no small measure due to the gracious caregivers along the way whom she extends heartfelt thanks and admiration.
