One time we went to lunch after church with the Kurtz’s in Grabill. As we were sitting there one of the waitress came running over and said to John “ Do you have my tootsie roll? He was always there with a smile. So enjoyed and appreciated all the support he and Mary Lou gave me. What a well lived life.

Mr. Kurtz was an amazing man, he always loved being around children and devoted much of his time to working with children, through the Harlan Youth Center or church. He will always be known as the tootsie roll man to our children and church kids. He was a treasure to the Harlan Lions Club and the community. He was loved and will be missed by all who knew him.

John Kurtz was a friend of my late father and mother, Jack & Janet Weicker. John went to Harlan High School with my parents, and they remained friends for many years. I will always remember John Kurtz when he would come by our house to visit my parents, as I was growing up....He was simply a wonderful person, and I will always remember the relationship he had with my parents. While I was sorry to hear of his passing, he lived a long life, and I observed first hand, that he had a positive influence on many people that he met during those many years. And most importantly, John Kurtz was able to leave this world with the imperishable crown of a good name! My sympathy goes out to all of those family members who survive him! John H. Weicker
