Obituary of Kuno Mirwaldt
Kuno Mirwaldt, 85, passed away Thursday, January 10, 2019 at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. Born in Tilsit, East Prussia he bravely left Germany at just 16 years old and emigrated to Canada. It was in Winnipeg, MB that he met and married Jacqueline Broadley in 1957 and they remained married until his passing. Kuno played fullback for the Winnipeg Army Navy and Airforce Legion and won the Canadian Nationals in 1962. He was not just skilled in soccer, he was a ferocious competitor. When recapping his play in an article in the Winnipeg Free Press dated 1955 the reporter wrote, “For once, the Scottish fullback, failed to take a poke at an opponent.” In 1993, Kuno was inducted into the Indiana Soccer Hall of Fame. From 1982 until 2000, Kuno sponsored and coached the Fort Wayne Settlers men’s soccer team. The team traveled regionally and throughout Canadian provinces where they enjoyed much success. He was a skilled coach, but it was his treatment of these men as extended members of his family which made for lasting relationships throughout his days. Each of the dozens of men who put on the Settlers jersey were welcomed into the family home for gatherings and friendship. He began his professional career as a Steamfitter in Winnipeg before moving to Indiana in 1964. He continued in the trade in the US where he was a member of the United Association of Journeyman and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipe fitting industry of the United States and Canada. He was a member of three affiliates in his career including Plumbers & Steamfitters Local 166 here in Fort Wayne. He proudly served his fellow members as a pension management trustee, a member of the negotiating committee and a member of the joint apprentice and training committee. He worked for Shambaugh& Sons beginning in 1967. After moving out of the field he progressed into a Project Manager and Field Superintendent before starting his own firm, Project Design and Piping, Inc. 1986 which is still thriving today. Kuno and Jacqueline raised four children who all survive, Katrina (Mark) Waltmire, Pamela (Thomas) Fields, Curtis (Sofia Rodriguez) Mirwaldt, and Bradley (Valerie) Mirwaldt. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kendra (Michael) Ludwig, Samantha (Austin) Harrison, and Chandler Fields; his siblings, Gunter (Doris) Mirwaldt; Hannelore Mahyles, and Irene Dzinkowski; and many loving nieces and nephews. Kuno is preceded in death by his parents, Ernst and Emma Mirwaldt, siblings, Gerda Wendorff and Siegfried Mirwaldt.
