Sally S. Jones-Evans, 78, of Fort Wayne, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, March 29, 2026. Born on September 11, 1947, in Fort Wayne, she was the daughter of the late Robert P. and Grace V. (Hirschy) Jones.
A graduate of North Side High School, Sally went on to earn both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from Indiana University. She dedicated her life’s work to serving others as a social worker and therapist, offering compassion, guidance, and steady support to those who needed it most. Her care for others was not simply a profession, but a calling she lived out every day.
Sally was a longtime member of both Beacon Heights Church of the Brethren and North Christian Church, where her faith and kindness were evident in the way she showed up for her community. She generously gave her time volunteering with Erin’s House for Grieving Children, Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana, Project Reads, and several other organizations, always seeking ways to engage with others and make a meaningful difference.
She embraced life with energy and joy. Sally found connection and rhythm in participating in a community drum circle, several luncheon groups, and dance classes. Nothing brought her greater happiness than being present for her grandchildren -- cheering them on at games, performances, and milestones, and celebrating each of their moments as if they were her own.
Those who knew Sally will remember her as a vibrant, strong, and deeply caring woman whose warmth could light up a room. She found great joy in giving of herself, and her presence brought comfort, encouragement, and connection to so many.
She is survived by her loving husband, Gary Evans; daughter, Cindy Closson; son, John (Angie) Evans; and her cherished grandchildren, Heather, Kaylee, Parker, Cora, Delayna, and Evelynn. She is also survived by her brothers, Reed Jones and Michael (Rose Ann) Jones; niece, Grace Ann; nephew, Robert (Jennifer) Jones; and aunt, Sally Ann McMahan. Besides her parents, she was preceded in passing by a host of additional family.
A funeral service will be 11:00 am on Friday, April 10, 2026, at Hockemeyer & Miller Funeral Home, 6131 St. Joe Road, Fort Wayne, with visitation one hour prior. Visitation will also be from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at the funeral home. Entombment will be at Lindenwood Cemetery, Fort Wayne.
